If you've read other pages, you'll remember that our last RV - the Arctic Fox - was an amazing camper which we've said was ALMOST perfect.
With both of us now transitioned to work from home positions, and traveling almost 50% of the year, Foxy just did not fit our active travel schedule while both working full time jobs. We needed a new RV that wasn't just bigger, but had the floorplan that would allow us to set up our office while not having that office space overrun the trailer.
We agreed that to justify our 5th RV, a nonnegotiable would be at least 2 independent working spaces that did not interfere with our camping & living space.
Brinkley RV was a new manufacturer and we quickly discovered that most, if not all of their floorplans had the full time worker in mind.
The bedroom wardrobe in most Brinkley RVs was designed with a sliding top and a drop in desk insert. This option allows the bedroom to convert easily to Tinas office. Upstairs, with a door to block noise, and dedicated AC, she has a perfect office space that remains completely out of the way during non-work hours.
A big "AH HA" moment for the RV office came when I discovered the curved 34" gaming display. With the 34" curved monitor we are able to maximize space - both on the desk and on the screen with the monitor able to be a single massive screen, or 2 split screens running 2 50% windows or 66%/33%. The laptop monitor completes a true 3 monitor layout we have at home while absolutely minimizing the equipment footprint.
The Brinkley "dinesk" - a convertible dining table & desk is the foundation of my office. This space gives me all the room I need for the same "3" monitor set up used in Tinas office by utilizing the aspect ratio on a 34' curved gaming monitor.
With the rear patio door to my immediate left, I can escape the office for a smoke break on the patio or just go stretch my legs.
When it's time for dinner or a card game, the table rolls out in literal seconds for the perfect work - play balance.
(Pay no mind to the case of vodka next to my chair - it's a demanding job after all)
Working from the road for 5 years now, it might go without saying that without a stable & reliable internet connection , work can't get done.
We've tried every option out there; campground or public wifi, hotspot tethering from the phone, Pepwave sim router and antennas, and more.
I will simply say that Starlink works in every location, every time - period. The hardware is more than affordable, the service is solid with worst performance that we've experienced being 200MBS down, 8 MBS up, and typical speed 2x - 3x that. Without Starlink, all of this does not happen.
Most of our stops and adventures include a "home base" at an RV park or RV resort with "full hookups." This simply means that amenities such as power, water, and sewer are at our campsite. While "glamping" our power needs are taken care of by simply plugging our rig in to the power pedestal and enjoying an unlimited flow of electricity.
Most is not all, and many of our adventures are "boondocking" or having no resources that we did not pack onboard - including electricity.
To be certain that we always have power to work and play, we installed 560 AH of lithium batteries and 1,370 watts of solar. With these batteries and solar, we could in theory, stay off the grid indefinitely as long as the sun shines to keep us recharged.
We do also pack a 4800 watt portable generator just in case the sun wants to take a few days off or if we will need to high draw our power grid - such as long runs of AC.
How do you manage power input from 12V DC, 110V AC, 4 solar panels, generator, shore power and sending that to the rig, keeping 12V systems on a 12V current, 110V systems on 110V, unless you need to invert 110V applications to run only off a 12V source, while keeping the batteries charged by converting 110V to 12V current? Well, if you're smart - you don't manage that - Victron manages it.
While I would love to take credit for the Victron install, it was well above and beyond my expertise. JR @ Off The Grid RVs in Quartzsite built this beautiful system and I would recommend them for any RV solar needs
